SWARM — Can You Explain it in 100 Wds?
Filed Under Business Life, Outside the Box, Successful Blog, ZZZ-FUN | 20 Comments
While You Wait for the Party
I was strolling around the Internet and found this most unusual site. It’s called Swarm. The homepage says its a graphical map of how hundreds of websites around the world connect to each other in real time. It is that.
You can chat about a site in forums or you can watch traffic move via red lines.
To answer the question Why use this? the page says Swarm is a useful tool for browsing not searching, to come with an open mind. To get to the homepage click on this screenshot. To actually try it, then click the button that says “Go use Swarm.”
It’s really cool to look at. . . . I’ve been doing that for two days now. Swarm is so beautiful and fun. I’d like to recommend it for a business reason, but I still haven’t come up with a practical use for it. It sure is a fun toy, though. I can’t even tell you what it is in 100 words or less.
Can you tell me?

Link Leak Virus for Blog Writers

Writers
Link Leak Virus is a special strain of the indie virus with blogtipping mutations that occur in threes. These three are for three cool places writers.
- one a place you should join, if only to read the writing
- a writing job blog I found for this post — CAUTION: I don’t know a thing about the jobs.
- a writer who doesn’t believe in writer’s block, which is only one of the million reasons I love him.

Tuesday Open Comment Night
YES, the mike will be open again tonight. So start collecting your thoughts. Remember, you get to bring what you want to talk about.
The rules are simple — be nice.
We got things going really fast last week. If you missed it, stop by this week, and check it out.
Some things we might talk about could include whether:
- anyone will ever pay for content on the Internet.
- Technorati will quit rolling out new features and get control of its old ones.
- the telcos will win on net neutrality
- anyone has a cool idea for what we should do on the blog this weekend.
AND THE EVER POPULAR, WHERE IS EVERYBODY?
It’s like any rambling conversation. Don’t try to read it all. Jump in whenever you get here.
Just go to the end and start talking. EVERYONE is WELCOME.

Wikipedia Called Us Nonsense
So maybe you were around when we got mired in the labyrinth of the Wikipedia, or when we tried to find out why an article, written by Martin Neumann of the Small Office Herald about the Link Leak Virus, a term coined by Mike Sigers, was summarily deleted within minutes of it’s submission.
I actually wrote to Wikipedia about the situation. The official Wikipedia response to my email said I’d get a response in a few minutes . . . that was over 13 days ago. Hope the young man took food and water with him. A reader friend let us know that some editor said that it was “nonsense.” Kudos to the Advice Librarian who helped us make sense of everything.
We at Successful Blog needed that. We hadn’t had our ideas or our writing called nonsense by a stranger who didn’t know us for a very long while.
Finally I’ve found the home for us — The Encyclopedia of Stupid! Read more

Technology available today makes being geographically distant a non-issue. The talent pool is wide open. People can work together with thousands of miles between them almost as easily as they can separated by only two feet.”

Blogging advice
The key is interacting on other users’ websites. Everyone tells you to get good links to your site, but that’s hard to do if you don’t go out of your way to participate on all the sites of your personal interest. This means writing more thoughtful comments than “cool entry” and even sending the occasional email to those sites where comments aren’t enabled. Recognize other people’s efforts, and yours will be recognized in time. It’s that age-old Karma effect!

Open Comment Night 2
It’s that Open Comment Night 2 was also a grand success. 174 comments and at times they were flying so fast, it was hard to keep up. We’re already discussing ways to improve it.
- Martin has volunteered to gather suggested topics of the week — things that people around the blogosphere have been talking about. Those will be posted early in the day so that folks will have something to think about if they want to come prepared with a thought or two to add to the commentary. This topics list is meant for inspiration only and is no way intended to fetter the free flowing fun of the conversational atmosphere that we’ve managed to get going.
- Scott has suggested that we announced a starting time and I’m taking him up on that. I think it makes real sense for folks to know when the mike is turned on.
- Everyone should be aware that like coming late to a party, there is no need to catch up on what went before you arrived . . . just join in when you get there.
- If you have more suggestions, please leave them in the comments on this post. Comment night is a community event. So let’s make it for everyone.
One question remains outstanding. . . .
Does Tuesday night work for you?
Unless there is an outcry in favor of another night, Open Comment Night will be every Tuesday, starting at 7:00p.m. Chicago time. There sidebar is open and there is no closing hour.
See you here again next week!
